Cystic fibrosis (CF) has been perplexing doctors and scientists since the 1700s. By the time Joey O’Donnell was born in 1974, the limited knowledge of the etiology and pathophysiology of the disease gave patients with CF a life expectancy of only about 10 years. Although Joey’s battle with CF was never an easy one, he surprised everyone by surviving 12 years.

In November of 1986 in their son’s memory, Joe and Kathy O’Donnell created the Joey Fund as an independent financial reserve that works in conjunction with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The partnership has since raised over $35,000,000 to provide financial support for CF patients and research toward a cure. Today, thanks to the work of the Foundation and its partners, a broader understanding of the disease state, and advances in treatments, war is now being waged against CF on cellular and genetic levels, and the life expectancy for patients with CF has risen to almost 40 years. Still, the need to find a cure remains urgent.

On December 23, 2009, Joey’s father, Joseph J. O’Donnell, will appear on WCVB’s “Chronicle” series, which will be focusing on charities making a measurable impact to society. Joe is slated to discuss the milestones achieved to date by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the fundraising from his son’s namesake film premiere, which recently featured “The Blind Side,” starring Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw and Kathy Bates.

As in years past, Sabre Imagery was proud to assist in the production of the annual Joey O’Donnell Film Premiere. For this year’s 25th anniversary celebration, Sabre provided the branding for the event across a variety of media. Sabre also created the invitation and signage, including two 8’x16’ banners, 25 posters marking each year’s featured film and of the milestones achieved by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Commemorating the 25th anniversary, Sabre also put together a 2-minute promotional movie trailer which was shown before the feature film.

mb_185x120The flutter of a butterfly’s wings can cause quite a stir! Here at Sabre, we are working with Ovations for the Cure to host a majestic fundraising event, Night of the Monarch. Founded by the late Patty Franchi Flaherty in 2005, Ovations for the Cure is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the research, patient treatment and awareness of ovarian cancer. Patty, who lost her mother to the disease over 30 years ago, was diagnosed herself in 1999 and spent five years in remission before being diagnosed a second time in 2005. Determined to be victorious—not just for herself, but for others as well—Patty and 10 intrepid girlfriends embarked on a mission to “save other women from the devastation of ovarian cancer,” and Ovations for the Cure was born.

What began four years ago with a premiere fundraising event, the Stuart Weitzman Fashion Show, has now blossomed into a spectacular twilight gala: Night of the Monarch, featuring the Stuart Weitzman Fashion Show with jewelry designs by A.M. DePrisco Wellesley. Sabre aids in the production of the flagship event by managing the design of the stage area, runway, signage, invitations, programs and show collateral. We also facilitate electronic advertising through the Ovations website and email and coordinate the administration of electronic ticket sales. The show helps raise money to support the organization’s mission; last year’s event helped push Ovations over the $1 million mark in monies directed for ovarian cancer!

The event will take place on September 26, 2009 at the Westin Boston Waterfront and will honor those who face ovarian cancer as well as those who have succumbed to the disease, including a special tribute to Patty Franchi Flaherty. September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and Night of the Monarch will be THE local event to show your support to the cause. Visit www.nightofthemonarch.org to reserve your tickets before the chance flies away!

Summer is in full swing, but mark your calendars – The 25th Annual Joey O’Donnell Film Premiere is right around the corner! Sabre is helping The Joey Fund design invitations for this November’s big 25th anniversary movie event. The Joey Fund, in partnership with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF), was created in 1986 in honor of Joey O’Donnell, a courageous boy who fell victim to the disease at age 12. Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States. The Joey Fund raises money for research and also helps New England cystic fibrosis patients in times of extreme sickness. Come join CFF and The Joey Fund at the film premiere on November 15th at the Atrium Mall in Chestnut Hill to celebrate The Joey Fund’s 25th anniversary! For more information about The Joey Fund and CFF, please visit www.joeyfund.org or www.cff.org.

The Kasia ProjectSabre takes on ovarian cancer again with The Kasia Project. This is a site built in HTML with video feed and a strong message. The Kasia Project is a documentary of Dr. Kasia Clark’s journey through diagnoses and treatment of ovarian cancer. Kasia is a family/general practice doctor and found that she had late-stage ovarian cancer at age 42. Her therapy began with training for a triathalon, and facing her disease head-on. Ovations for the Cure of Ovarian CancerDue to the rapid growth of the organization and its loyal following, Ovations outgrew their previous website. We designed a custom site built in PHP with expanded content and navigation to continue to provide a network of hope and healing to those touched by the disease. This site also features flash animation and video, custom storefront, a user-driven blog, and so much more. We also optimized the site for search engine optimization to achieve a higher ranking. living conversationsThe LivingConversations site is a social networking site that is a celebration of breast cancer survival through personal video stories contributed by women who are now on the other side of their breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. The site was recently profiled on The Today Show.

At Livingconversations.com, women can share their experiences with life after breast cancer via videos and written text, and in so doing, give each other hope of getting beyond the disease. The site was developed to be a resource offering a community of hope, inspiration and courage for the many women, family members and support networks affected by breast cancer. In addition to providing cancer survivors a place to upload personal video stories, the site offers an extensive resource library, of information on useful books and articles, support groups, exercise and nutrition suggestions and treatment updates for those diagnosed with breast cancer.

Sabre designed the site for LivingConversations and works closely with the foundation’s management team to constantly expand and enhance the features of this online community. This site is built in Drupal, an open-source content management system that allows for video feed, blog, forums, chatrooms, and social networking. Sabre has produced a method of making it promising for survivors to share their experiences in video and online weblog formats. The site also features a link for donations to Catalyst for the Cure, a research fund at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute supporting research for developing and improving treatments for metastatic breast cancer.
